Frequently Asked QuestionsDo you accept late work?
For short-term assignments, I do not accept late work. In accordance to school policy, late work is not accepted. If a student is absent, short-term assignments (assignments given three days or less to complete) will be accepted late. However, if student is absent the day a long-term project is due, the student must send the assignment or provide proof of completion via e-mail. I dock a letter grade each day a long-term assignment is late. I give student four "No Questions Asked" late passes at beginning of first trimester. A student may not use late passes to move the dates of scheduled presentations. Students may submit unused late passes for extra credit on the day of the final exam. Can I have extra credit? No. I do not give extra credit on demand. Students have the opportunity to raises their overall final grade by six percent through submitting unused late passes and reading. Reading books that correspond to our studies can boost students grades. Please visit the Extra Credit page for more information. What can I do to help my child be more successful? Students need to study for tests and quizzes. For some students, this may be the first time they have had to study for an assessment to earn a passing grade. Students may need guidance on how to study. Before a spelling test, students should be practicing their words at home with you. I try my best to help each child with their organizational skills. One of the best things you can do for your child is teach them how to organize their work. Many students prefer sliding their papers (without a folder or binder) into their backpack. If students cannot find their papers, they cannot study, they cannot complete homework, and they cannot turn in their homework. It is a vicious cycle! Apart from organizational skills, students need to be attentive in school. At JMPS, we don't allow phones in the classroom because we believe students should take a break from the addictive qualities of phones. Please make sure your child is getting adequate sleep and eating before they come to school. Lastly, there is a correlation between strong writers and avid readers. Students build their vocabulary and encounter complex sentence structures through books. Please encourage your child to read at home! How is my child doing in school? JMPS is a traditional school, and we do not post grades online. However, we do mail home grade checks and progress reports every three weeks. In addition, we give students a copy of their grades to bring home. If you would like more detailed information, please feel free to send me an e-mail. I do not discuss grades with students during class to protect their confidentiality, but I am happy to discuss grades during office hours. |
